A Ghost in the Fourth Watch

“When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, “It’s a ghost!” and they cried out for fear.”
Matthew 14:26

Reflection

The help arrived and they screamed. Fear is not only afraid of bad things; when it has been afraid long enough, it misreads the rescue as one more threat.

Pray

God, I have been frightened long enough to be suspicious of good news. Steady me enough to look twice at what is approaching before I decide what it is.

Amen.

Declare

Not everything that startles me is against me.
